Wonderful Performance!
Friday, March 19th, 2010
Saw “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” last night at the Jefferson Playhouse, an Opera House Theatre Players production. We LOVED it!
Small disclaimer: Our daughter, Sara Whitaker has a big part…but we are not at all biased.
Seldom do you hear so much laughter throughout a play. This Neil Simon script gives the actors a lot of room for interpretation and emphasis. This cast takes full advantage. It makes a really entertaining evening.
Performances tonight and Saturday are nearly sold out but I think you can still get tickets (on sale downtown at Blessings, 119 N Polk Street, $10).

Riverport Ambassadors
Saturday, March 13th, 2010
I just finished my first afternoon as a costumed Riverport Ambassodor. What fun! I started about 11:30 am, dressed in tophat, embroidered vest, string tie, and mid-length frock coat over black cotton trousers and white high-collared shirt.
I decided not to try staying in period character. I don’t know enough history to pull that off with any conviction. My goal was just to meet and greet visitors, point them toward their immediate destinations and make sure they know what businesses are new in town. I mention businesses on Walnut, Austin, and Vale streets, places that suffer somewhat from lack of foot traffic. I hand out brochures, walking tour maps, and business cards from local shops. But primarily, I smile and chat, trying to enhance each person’s general impression of Jefferson.
Reactions from tourists range from wary avoidance to enthusiastic participation. One little girl pulled at my coattail until I picked her up and visited face-to-facce. She tried on my tophat and sat on my lap while her mother and aunt finished their lunch at Glory Dayz.
I stopped in to see friends at many of the businesses in town. Roy Richie was in his railroad engineer’s outfit. Restaurants were busy and lots of families were shopping (spring break is in full swing). I met one couple. The woman introduced herself as Belinda, owner of Austin Street Cottages. Which just proves that, even in a tiny town like Jefferson, I don’t know everyone (yet).
The afternoon felt like a great success. People like seeing costumed city guides. They enjoy the playfulness that a costume inserts automatically into any encounter. The result is that visitors enjoy their visit a bit more and possibly are encouraged to spend more time and money here. Perhaps this one small encounter will prompt them to return soon.
One visitor wanted pictures!
